Spelling Words

Third Grade spelling is a unique and effective way to teach kids the rules of our English language.  Each week you will receive 5 words that follow a spelling rule.  Your job Monday night is to come up with 5 more words that you either commonly misspell, words that would follow the rule, or words that you misspelled from last week's test.

For example:  I have given you 5 words that follow the "ight" rule:

1.  might
2.  sight
3.  light
4. delight
5.  flight

By Tuesday morning you need to have 5 more words.  Here are some examples:

6.  night (follows the rule)
7.  where (you commonly misspell this word)
8.  plight (follows the rule)
9.  airplane (you misspelled this word on the test last week)
10.  fright (follows the rule)

When I read your journal or other writing, I help you keep track of words that you commonly misspell.

On Friday your words are imputed into Spelling City (Online Program) and you give yourself your own spelling test!

Ideas for learning the words:
You can use Spelling City to help you learn the words. You can take a practice test using Spelling City or a parent. You can write the words a few times. You can create a word scramble. You can write them in a sentence or story.

Learning the words is your responsibility. You DO not need to turn in any work you did to learn the words. You do need to know how to spell the words for the test and in your everyday writing.
